A Gorgeous Villain by Saffron A. Kent

This was one of my most anticipated reads by Saffron A. Kent and it didn't disappoint. A Gorgeous Villain is the second book in the St. Mary's Rebels series featuring Callie Thorne and Reed Jackson. Their story is a second-chance romance that spans two years. Thankfully, the author has included the prequel—The Wild Mustang & The Dancing Fairy—so you won't be missing out on anything. I have a lot of thoughts about this book and at times, I couldn't help but think how young and naive Callie was. She was so adamant about not forgiving Reed for breaking her heart but she also couldn't help but yearn for him even though he used her. Reed had a lot of groveling to do and I can honestly say that he truly turned things around—shockingly. I hated him for hurting Callie but he had his reasons and not everything was what it seemed.

"I want to remember the pain, the misery. The tears I've cried. I want to remember my heartbreak. So I never make the same mistake again."

The angst and longing that these two had for each other was my favorite part of this book. There was so much tension and chemistry between the two—there always has been. Callie and Reed was an amazing but frustrating couple because he refused to forgive himself while she desperately wanted him to love her. I do have to admit that the dirty talking and sex between Callie and Reed was "tamer" compared to Salem and Arrow in My Darling Arrow. Yes, they had their sexy moments but most of it was Reed being incredibly sweet and protective over Callie. There was a part of this book that I didn't like and it was Callie and Reed's first time together. She lied and made him assume things. They also didn't practice safe sex. We all knew this was going to happen but the how left me a little unsatisfied.

"She does it for me. She always has. Her tight ballerina body and those big blue eyes and that good girl braid. And now with her feistiness, she's irresistible."

In the end, I really enjoyed reading Callie and Reed's story. Theirs was a heartbreaking romance but it was all worth it in the end. Reed was so focused on revenge that he never realized he had already fallen in love a long time ago. Callie's brothers also made a special appearance—Conrad and Ledger. We finally know who Wyn will end up with! I'm so excited for her story. Poe will obviously end up with the guardian she supposedly "hates." Even though Reed used and broke Callie's heart in the past, he made it up to her in the end and she forgave him. Both characters were likeable and I felt for them. If you love reading angsty second-chance romances with a hero who can be an "asshole" but also possessive and protective of his heroine, then I highly recommend giving this series a try!

The Other Side of Greed by Lily Zante

The Other Side of Greed was my first book by Lily Zante and it features all of the tropes that I love including enemies to lovers, opposites attract, and a slow burn romance. Like Kyra, it took me awhile to warm up to Brandon. He was selfish, greedy, and unrepentant. He was a complete contrast to his younger self in the prologue and Kyra. I assumed that he got adopted by a rich family and forgot about his brother, Kane. As with any romance, the chemistry and growing attraction between the hero and heroine is my favorite part of any book. Brandon and Kyra took awhile to warm up to each other and I can certainly see why. Kyra is incredibly suspicious of Brandon and for a good reason because he plans on infiltrating her nonprofit organization with a fake name and somehow persuade Kyra to give up her building. It certainly makes him come across as callous and cold.

Since the very beginning, I had been waiting ecstatically for Brandon to fall down from his high pedestal and eventually fall in love with Kyra. Lily Zante did not disappoint. Brandon did not understand why Kyra wanted to help the homeless and needy even when his past mirrors what these people are going through. Kyra herself is a great character and I sympathized with her cause. I would say that she is a workaholic who is incredibly passionate about her career. In the end, I really enjoyed this book and will be reading more from Lily Zante! This book would be categorized as contemporary romance and/or new adult. If you like a heroine is who compassionate, kind, and feisty with a hero who is cold, arrogant, and condescending but is irrevocably changed after meeting her, then I highly recommend this book!

Fable of Happiness by Pepper Winters

Fable of Happiness is the first book in the Fable series by Pepper Winters and it is a dark and compelling story that almost feels hopeless at times because of how broken the characters are. The author has exceeded herself when it comes to writing this haunting tale that toes the line of dubious consent. Kassen is an incredibly complex character who is the definition of a tortured anti-hero. At first, it would seem as though he does not care for Gemma and wants to kill her—but there are indeed flashes of humanity and compassion within him. It's just locked deep inside himself and behind that layer of feralness. Gemma encompasses all of the characteristics and traits of Pepper's previous heroines. She is naive, compassionate, fearless, and seemingly broken after meeting Kassen but she is also very brave in the face of despair. She will do anything to survive, including having sex with him.

"I knew I was beautiful to him. I knew I was everything he wanted in that moment. I knew I had the power to shatter his world with just a single touch."

Pepper Winters has crafted a tale that will not only leave you on the edge of your seat but also make you question the lines between right and wrong. How can something so pleasurable make you feel so disgusted? Kassen is currently the "villain" in this story. At this moment in time, he does not have any redeemable qualities besides showing some semblance of kindness to Gemma here and there. He is a very mysterious character whose past is shrouded in mystery. What made him become this way? What happened to him? He does share similar characteristics to Pepper's past heroes including Jethro, Q, and Sully but... not. He is also uniquely different and much more cruel.

"She branded me better than any fire, any ember… it made me thirst. Made me hiss and smoke with violence."

In the end, this was a fascinating beginning to the Fable series and it ends with a shocking cliffhanger. It was really difficult for me to read this because my heart felt so heavy. My heart broke for Gemma because she made a stupid mistake and it cost her. However, it also brought her to Kassen—whether good or bad, we don't know at the moment. I don't know what will happen to these two but I am looking forward to how it will all end once Pepper finishes their tale. I'm currently kicking myself for not waiting until it's finished because I would have loved to immediately read the next book. This is definitely a Pepper Winters book and fans of hers will love this! It's dark, gritty, erotic, and action-packed. If you love the captive-kidnapper trope within the dark romance genre, then this book is for you!

Dark Notes by Pam Godwin

Dark Notes was my first book by Pam Godwin and it was shocking, erotic, and combustible. I certainly had to fan myself a couple of times while reading their story. Emeric and Ivory made for an amazingly hot and sexy couple. While the age difference did bother me at first, Ivory was incredibly mature for her age—especially after going through all that trauma. They did not consummate their relationship until the end.

While I was reading this book, I could not stop thinking about Emeric and Ivory. Their chemistry was everything and the sexual tension between the two was bloody amazing. It just kept building up and up! I was also so afraid for them. I just wanted Emeric and Ivory to be happy TOGETHER. My heart also broke for Ivory because the people in her life were terrible human beings, except for Stogie and Emeric.

In the end, this was one of my favorite reads by Pam Godwin and it made me an instant fan of hers! Dark Notes had everything I want in a dark romance—emotion, angst, and a romance that left me feeling breathless. Emory and Ivory will always be one of my favorite couples because of how much growth and development these two went through. I highly recommend this book to those who love stories featuring an age-gap and forbidden romance with a young but legal and mature heroine who knows exactly what she wants and a hero who will do anything to keep her. It’s also a little taboo because of the student-teacher relationship.

Blame It on the Tequila by Fiona Cole

Blame It on the Tequila is the second book in the Blame It On the Alcohol series by Fiona Cole and features Nova and her second-chance romance with Parker. Nova was one of Vera's friend and I remembered she was quite wild with Rae. I typically don't read rockstar romances but I was intrigued and curious by Nova. However, I definitely had mixed feelings about this book towards the end even though I enjoyed it overall. At one point, I was really frustrated with the both of them because Nova kept running away and Parker just didn't understand. He chose his career over his love for Nova and it broke her heart.

"I hadn't been able to see or understand how much I'd love him until he was gone and took something vital with him."

Miscommunication, especially in a relationship, can either make or break it. Nova has been running away from her feelings for Parker and although it was frustrating at times, she was only able to cope from her past trauma and memories because of it. Promises made can be broken and unfortunately, Parker did not fulfill his promises to Nova when they were younger. The book often switches back and forth between the past and present. Despite having amazing chemistry, Parker and Nova had a lot of baggage between them. They simply needed to stop and talk to each other. As expected from Fiona Cole, the love scenes were incredibly sexy and hot because of the constant tension between Nova and Parker.

"Too much lingered between us. Too much tension and resentment. And sometimes, if I looked close enough—too much love to be hidden."

In the end, I enjoyed Blame It on the Tequila and will be looking forward to more books from this world and Fiona Cole in the future. I really hope that we will get books for the other band members—especially Oren and Ash because I am most curious about those two—as well as Rae, one of Nova's close friends, down the road! If you're looking for a second-chance romance that is angsty, emotional, passionate, and a little forbidden because Parker used to be Nova's step-brother, then I highly recommend this book!
