Necromancist by Charmaine Pauls

Necromancist (Seven Forbidden Arts, #6)Necromancist by Charmaine Pauls is the sixth installment in the Seven Forbidden Arts series that features characters who are more than meets the eye. Combining both paranormal and erotic romance, the story was action-packed, emotional, suspenseful, and full of steamy moments between Ivan and Alice. Although I was frustrated by their lack of communication, I was still invested in their relationship and wanted them to resolve their issues. Their love was angsty and will certainly pull at your heartstrings because the depth in which Ivan wanted to possess Alice was all encompassing. Ivan was a broken man and even though I wanted to shake him for having such negative thoughts about himself, Alice, Cain, and the world, I also understood where he was coming from. His bleak perspective was a product of his own upbringing—one where he never truly had a home and lost everything when Alice left him.
"This darkness that's in me, it's attracted to your light. I need you like fire needs oxygen. You're my flame, and I'm your moth."
Ivan Kray was such an interesting and contradictory character. He was obnoxious and dominant but also passionate and obsessive. Alice was everything to him and he was unwilling to let her go, even when they have been separated from each other for nine years. This need to possess and own her was prevalent throughout the book and made for some frustrating but also steamy moments between the two. In addition to the romance, Ivan also has his own secret—one where he is a necromancist with the power to manipulate and control the dead and living. This power has attracted the attention of the main antagonist of the series, Godfrey, who will stop at nothing to obtain it. Alice Jones is the daughter of Cain Jones, the leader of the paranormal task force who has been featured many times in the series thus far. Their relationship has been strained ever since he walked away from her life following the death of her mother. I would describe Alice as empathetic, emotional, insecure, and loving. Despite being hurt by Ivan in the past and present, she continues to love and care for him.
"You're mine, the one thing in life that belongs to me."
In the end, I enjoyed reading Ivan and Alice's second chance love story even when it frustrated me at times because they simply could have talked to each other instead of resolving it through sex. Don't get me wrong, the love scenes were smoking hot and extremely sexy but I could see it becoming a problem when Alice begins wanting more for herself. Ivan was in denial with himself and didn't believe he was capable of love after losing Alice the first time. He never thought he was good enough for her and kept placing her on this pedestal when in reality, Alice had loved him in spite of everything all along. This book actually reminded me of the author's earlier works, The Astronomer because the two main characters had a lot of misunderstandings and didn't communicate with each other very well. However, I was completely satisfied with Alice and Ivan's relationship by the end of this book. I highly recommend this series to those who have read and loved Charmaine Pauls' stories before as well as those who love a possessive and "bad boy" hero who will stop at nothing to protect and obtain his sweet heroine.

Sweet Mercy by Amelia Wilde

Sweet MercySweet Mercy solidified Amelia Wilde's standing as one of my favorite dark romance authors because of her beautiful and poetic prose. This book left a deep impression on me because it exemplified how love and obsession can become one and the same. Now that's how I would describe Daphne Morelli and Emerson LeBlanc's twisted, intense, and sensual romance. Emerson is one Amelia's most fascinating and multifaceted hero because of the many complicated layers he has beneath that carefully constructed persona. As his foil, Daphne is similarly complicated and a contradiction herself. She longs for freedom but feels safe, desired, and even loved with Emerson. There is no denying the fact that these two are made for each other. Emerson's obsession with Daphne was the main focal point in Dark Reign but it slowly transforms into one of need and love as they navigate their new relationship where she is his most treasured and beautiful piece of art.
"You're a work of art. My favorite piece. I'll remember it forever."
To say that I was surprised by the outcome of Daphne and Emerson's relationship would be an understatement. I knew that their story was going to be different. Daphne has always wanted to be independent but she ironically ends up finding freedom in Emerson as his "captive." There is both light and dark in Daphne and the author does an incredible job portraying this aspect of her character whenever she is with Emerson. I loved their dynamic and I am happy to say that Daphne and Emerson's romance was all-encompassing, angsty, kinky, dirty, and very steamy. However, I do have to admit that I was somewhat bothered by one particular scene between these two because it involved exhibitionism. I initially thought it was out of character for them but I eventually understood why they needed it. After all, Daphne is Emerson's most precious piece of art.
"Art is everything to him. But I am more than everything. It's the thinnest layer of paint over his heart."
In the end, Sweet Mercy simply exceeded my expectations and I can't wait to read Last Resort because the book does end with a cliffhanger. I had been highly anticipating Leo Morelli's appearance and he did not disappoint. Daphne and Emerson's twisted relationship had me on the edge of my seat and it continued to captivate me from start to finish. As Daphne begins to unravel the many layers and secrets behind Emerson, she finds exactly what she has always wanted all along—a love like no other. Emerson may be broken but Daphne has the ability to make him whole again. Fans of Amelia Wilde and the Midnight Dynasty world will absolutely love this book because it continues along the same vein as Leo's story—sexy, romantic, heartbreaking, and dark. I highly recommend this series to those who love the captive romance trope with a hero who is completely obsessed with his heroine but loves her enough to let her go.

Beautiful Nightmare by Giana Darling

Beautiful Nightmare (Dark Dream, #2)Beautiful Nightmare by Giana Darling is the conclusion to Tiernan Morelli and Bianca Belcante's story that not only takes place in the Midnight Dynasty world but builds upon the existing stories that have already been established in Lucian and Leo Morelli's books as well as Winston Constantine's. Both Tiernan and Bianca experience significant character growth and development as they navigate their feelings for each other as well as the hidden secrets of the Constantine and Morelli families. This book cannot be read as a standalone because it immediately picks up after Dangerous Temptation. Watching this dark, broody, and sexy man fall in love and coming to terms with his feelings was a heady thing to witness. I was surprised and elated by Tiernan's change because it revealed his duality—he was ruthless and violent to his enemies but possessive and passionate when it came to those he loved.
"He was this contradiction only my heart could decipher. A lovely monster. A beautiful nightmare."
While Tiernan was dealing with his feelings for Bianca and how broken his relationship with his father truly was, Bianca also came to some realizations of her own. What she thought she wanted was merely a facade. The Constantine's were nothing like she imagined and the revelation regarding Tiernan's last name at the end of Dangerous Temptation has her angry and conflicted. I have some thoughts regarding Bianca because while I understood her wanting to uncover her family's secrets, she was also incredibly naive. I grew frustrated with some of her decisions because she was risking her own safety and needlessly worrying those who cared for her. At the same time, Bianca was also going back and forth between hating and pining for Tiernan.
"I'm a greedy man and I won't stop until I have your soul."
In the end, I truly enjoyed Tiernan and Bianca's story because it was incredibly sexy, dark, and brought much light to the animosity between the Constantine's and Morelli's. Lucian and Leo made appearance in this book and it was very impactful because of their reunion with Tiernan. I do have to say that I can't wait to read Carter's book—he was intriguing, secretive, mysterious but also kind for a Morelli. Giana Darling has truly done justice in writing Tiernan Morelli's story, this broken man who simply wanted to be loved. While the age gap between Tiernan and Bianca did initially make me pause, their love and passion for each other simply burned up the pages and I completely forgot about it. Fans of Giana Darling's writing will absolutely love this book as well as those who love reading about dark and scarred heroes who simply can't live without his bold and audacious heroine.

Green Envy by Aleatha Romig

Green Envy (Sin, #2)After the experiencing the captivating, mysterious, and sensual romance between Donavan Sherman and Julia McGrath in Red Sin, I was highly anticipating the continuation of their love story in Green Envy and it certainly did not disappoint. Aleatha Romig has crafted a tale full of intrigue, betrayal, secrets, suspense, and a love that goes beyond mere words, age, and experience. Each chapter builds from the last and we are given more pieces of the puzzle to unravel. Fans of Aleatha will know that she has had plenty of experience with this after the Consequences and Infidelity series. Although Julia and Van's all-consuming romance does take a back seat to reveal the secrets hidden behind the story in this installment, their passion and chemistry with each other continues to burn up the pages long after.
"When I'm with you, it's as if we've always been meant for one another."
Moving between the past and present, Green Envy reveals parts of who Donovan used to be as well as his past connection to Lennox Demetri from Betrayal. I was completely surprised, conflicted, and even overjoyed by it because his attempt at moving on meant that he had finally found the one thing that kept him from succumbing to his loneliness—Julia. Donovan had always wanted more until it left him feeling hollow. For such a contradictory character who was both dominant and soft, much like a wolf in sheep's clothing, his fateful meeting with Julia changed everything and brought light to his dark world. Julia herself also experiences character growth as she becomes more confident in herself and power over her destiny with Donovan's love and faith as her anchor.
"My eyes opened to the reality that envy was a common river that ran deep. Even those people I believed to be satisfied weren't."
In the end, Green Envy was another excellent addition to the Sin series and I am dying to read Gold Lust because of that stunning yet also frustrating cliffhanger. I expected the shoe to drop and yet it still shocked me. From Donovan and Julia's passionate and whirlwind romance to the unraveling behind who Donovan Sherman really is will have you on the edge of your seat and wanting more. I'm so excited to read more of this series because the author has truly captured what I loved most about her writing—how every small detail and bit of information adds more layers and depth to her characters and stories until it reaches a crescendo. I highly recommend this series to those who love a story that is layered and complex with characters who are equally so because of how they see the world as they navigate love, danger, and hidden enemies.

Triple Threat by K. Webster

Triple ThreatTriple Threat by K. Webster was completely unexpected, intense, and full of intrigue. I never expected a book for the Terror Triplets from Ash and Winston's book because they were seemingly irredeemable in my eyes after what they did. Lo and behold, K. Webster has crafted another dark and slightly romantic tale where the so-called villain has a heart. Sully, Sparrow, and Scout had so many complicated layers to them. They were more than the rich, cruel, and spoiled brats that we met in the Skyscraper Cinderella. Sully was broody, snarky, unexpectedly kind, and wanted more from his current life but stayed for his brothers; Sparrow was arrogant, charming, and such a tease; Scout was darkness personified and the psychotic one in this trio of siblings. However, inside that messed up head of his... he loved his brothers dearly and only wanted to protect them. What they never expected was Landry Croft who had the power to potentially bring them to their knees.
"There's just something about him that makes me want to tell him everything. He draws me to him. Even his secrets call to me. I want to know him."
Landry is the type of heroine I adore because of her caring and soft nature, especially towards her younger sister Della, but she also has a core of steel when dealing with monsters. Behind that ice princess persona is a young woman who is simply trying to survive her cruel and tyrannical father. Unfortunately, she may have left one cage for another with the triplets after her. Over the course of the book, Landry develops close but different relationships with each other Mannford brothers. My favorite would have to be between Sully and Sparrow. Della and Sully's relationship was adorable and funny, which soften Landry's heart. Landry and Sparrow's relationship was teasing and playful. Scout, on the other hand, was dark and erotic. The twist in all of this was that the triplets were all pretending to be one person.
"This thing between us is inevitable. It was the second I laid eyes on you."
In the end, I truly enjoyed this "redemption or is it?" story that K. Webster has written for the Terror Triplets. I completely forgot that they were loosely related to the Morelli's and to find out that Bryant was controlling them from behind the scenes was rather interesting. Since this book takes place in the Midnight Dynasty, a lot has happened since Winston and Ash got together—especially between the Constantine's and Morelli's. I'm sure that Bryant won't be able to fully control the Terror Triplets for long because his power, though he has some, is dwindling. The book does end with a cliffhanger that certainly left me wanting more and I look forward to reading the next one. Unfortunately, no standalone book here. Fans of K. Webster and the Midnight Dynasty saga will absolutely love this book and be surprised by it. I commend the author for making "male lead material" out of these three. I highly recommend reading Skyscraper Cinderella for further context and additional background regarding the Terror Triplets because they were different back then.
