TWO YEARS
Since my life changed for the second time and not necessarily for the better. Two years since I traded prison bars for streets and hunted a runaway who I’d met in an alley.
TWO DAYS
Since I forgot how to lie, woke to fists, and chased after the girl who’d been stolen from me.
TWO HOURS
To save her, rescue her, keep my lies intact. She looks at me full of hate. I look at her full of confession.
TWO MINUTES
For our relationship to switch from mutual dislike to floundering with unknowns. I’ve hurt her. Now, she’s hurt me. I guess we’re even.
TWO SECONDS
For her to listen, to see, to finally know who I am. The answer comes with hardship. The answer isn’t what she wants to hear.
TWO BREATHS
For me to walk out the door.
TWO HEARTBEATS
For it all to be over.

Once Upon A [Stolen] Time by Samreen Ahsan

Once Upon A [Stolen] TimeThank you to Samreen Ahsan for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Samreen Ahsan's Once Upon A [Stolen] Time was my first introduction to the author and I can say I am absolutely intrigued by her. When I first started reading, I was captured by the setting and time-traveling aspect. I had hoped for a kick ass heroine, a dark and tragic hero, and an amazing love story. What I got was a little bit different but I still enjoyed it nonetheless.

Myra was a heroine I had a hard time connecting to. It felt like I was inside a sixteen-year old's teenage brain who constantly had her head in the clouds. She's very into princes, princesses, castles... you get the drift. Basically, she's enamored with fairy tales and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. I just didn't connect with her. Edward on the other hand... I was curious about. The premise of the hero living in an entirely different time period from the heroine was quite interesting and I wanted to know how the two could possibly end up together, especially when separated by time itself. I loved reading in Edward's point of view and I felt for this complex and tragic character.
"Once upon a time, in a distant land, there lived a beast that imprisoned his prey outside of time. He captured her, unraveled her, destroyed her and never let her go."
Like many others before me, I struggled with starting this book and had a hard time getting into it. But once the ball started rolling, so to speak, I became a lot more interested and invested in the mystery as well as Myra and Edward's romance. It felt real and I was moved by Edward especially in his affection for Myra.
"There were only two people in this time. Just me and him, as the world spun into a timeless abyss."
In the end, Samreen Ahsan's unique writing and sweet romance between Edward and Myra had me looking forward to the next book. It almost had a Beauty and the Beast feel to it, one of my favorite Disney movies and stories. While the book does end in a cliffhanger and we have no idea when Samreen will write the next one, this was still a very enjoyable read and I highly recommend it for the tortured hero and his romance with our contemporary heroine.

Throne of Truth by Pepper Winters

Throne of Truth (Truth and Lies Duet, #2)I will try my best to make this review spoiler-free as possible but there will be spoilery quotes. I would also like to thank Pepper Winters and her team for providing me with an ARC.

Pepper Winter's Truth and Lies series was a thoroughly provocative read start to finish. Throne of Truth picks off right after Crown of Lies and readers will be in for an exhilarating ride that will leave you breathless and on the edge of your seats. You'll be terrified for the characters and you'll be clueless to their fates. How can it possibly end well with so many secrets, lies, and enemies? The only way to find out the truth is to read Penn and Elle's entire story, all the way to the end.

Penn Everett is a fantastic hero and I wish I got to know more about his past, his motivations, and his dreams. While we did get a brief glimpse of that in Throne of Truth, I wanted to know more. I sympathized with him and hated those who got in his way. I was angry at Elle for her lack of trust. I was on Team Penn.

Pepper Winters absolutely knows how to write her suspense well. In fact, I believe it might be one of the best parts about this book. It was an intoxicating ride since the first page and I was immediately gripped by Elle's predicament. I had so many feelings while reading this book: Fear, anger, sadness, happiness for a short time, and of course, relief when it was all over. There's no denying Penn and Elle's explosive chemistry and as always, Pepper Winters knows how to demonstrate such sexual tension and lust across the pages. The love scenes definitely had me hot and bothered, that's for sure.
"I'm going to take away all your control. I'll fuck you the way I want to fuck you. I'll look after you while I ruin you. I'll protect you while I hurt you—just like I promised that first night. I'll take everything you have to give. We play rough. We love hard. We live every fucking fantasy."
Although I fully believe in Penn and Elle's love for one another, I did feel like the romance wasn't as developed compared to Pepper's previous books. Not enough time was spent between the two for me to fully immerse myself in their relationship. Elle also became a frustrating point for me because of her lack of trust and sometimes her inability to do anything. To be fair, however, she did try her best to turn the situation around and eventually got better in the end.
"He completed me. I wanted him. I wanted him inside me. I wanted him for all eternity."
While I didn't exactly have any problems with the book overall, I did get bored at one point and wanted more action. Time skips, fillers, and the waiting game are not my favorite things in the world, even when they're needed. I was disappointed the villains didn't get what was coming for them, sort of. At least it felt like they got off easy compared to the things they did to our couple. In any case, these were just minor things and will absolutely not take away the enjoyment of this book.

Overall, I thought Throne of Truth was a wonderful conclusion to Penn and Elle's story. Sure, the bad guys don't always get what was coming for them but at least our couple is alive, happy, and looking forward to the future. The epilogue was also very sweet and romantic—perfect for our couple who has been through a lot.  I can't wait for Pepper Winter's next book and I'm dying for her return to the world of the Dollars series!
